By removing the dutch word ‘allochtoon’ from our language, the government tried to influence the negative thought process that is associated to people with a different ethnic background. Does it actually help to get rid of these words itself or should we change the way we use them? How big is the influential part that media and politics play in the public opinion on an ethnic group?
In these times, where the boundaries of our digital world keep increasing, google suggestions gives us a little peak into the questions that the Dutch people put out on the world wide web. We want people to be aware of the fact that connotations in language change the way people think, and therefore live. Words have different type of loadings, and maybe we don’t have to use them, or we can use them in a different way. Google suggestions is an interesting way of showing this by it’s bluntness.
